Project Overview

Byblos Constructions successfully delivered the decommissioning and demolition of an old fuel terminal at West Angelas Mine, replacing redundant fuel storage infrastructure with a new dome shelter and usable operational infrastructure. The project included the safe removal of fuel tanks, pipelines, pumps, electrical infrastructure, concrete structures, and associated assets, followed by site remediation and preparation for future use.

Scope of Works

The works comprise the controlled deconstruction and demolition of an existing old fuel terminal and associated infrastructure as follows:

  • Site establishment, work zones, permits, isolations and demolition preparation.
  • Removal of diesel pipelines, transfer pumps, pipe supports and associated fuel infrastructure.
  • Removal of electrical infrastructure, distribution equipment, enclosures, radio cabinets and redundant cabling.
  • Construction of temporary access ramp to support fuel tank demolition works by specialist contractors.
  • Demolition of concrete ring beams, pad areas and redundant infrastructure following tank removal.
  • Final earthworks, site trimming and grading, environmental controls, housekeeping and demobilisation.

Key Challenges

  • Managing demolition works within a live mining environment while maintaining strict safety controls.
  • Safely isolating and removing fuel-related infrastructure containing potential residual fuels and hazardous materials.
  • Coordinating multiple stakeholders and specialist contractors throughout the staged demolition process.
  • Working on steep terrain and elevated areas requiring specialised access and working-at-height controls.
  • Ensuring environmental compliance through waste segregation, recycling, spill prevention, and responsible disposal practices

Outcomes

The project transformed an obsolete fuel storage facility into a functional operational area, delivering a safe, compliant, and future-ready site while successfully completing complex demolition and remediation works to Rio Tinto standards.
