Project Overview

Hope Downs 1 forms part of the Greater Hope Downs iron ore mining hub located approximately 100 km north-west of Newman in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The operation is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and Hancock Prospecting and is a key contributor to iron ore production in one of the world’s most significant resource regions.

Byblos Constructions successfully completed the Hope Downs 1 Central Facilities Refurbishment, delivering significant upgrades to the site’s operational and dining infrastructure. The project was undertaken within an active mine environment, requiring careful coordination to maintain ongoing site operations while improving amenity and functionality.

The scope formed part of a broader expansion of central facilities, including new dining, kitchen, and support infrastructure to meet increased site demand.

Scope of Works

The project involved the refurbishment and expansion of key facilities, including:

  • Construction of new dining and crib room extensions
  • Installation of new cool room structures
  • Refurbishment of kitchen facilities, back-of-house areas, servery and dining areas, and crib wash entry
  • Installation of new kitchen equipment to modernise operations
  • Delivery of civil works including footpaths and landscaping

In addition, Byblos managed full services integration across electrical systems, hydraulic systems and mechanical services, ensuring all upgrades were fully integrated with existing infrastructure and met operational requirements for efficiency and safety.

Key Challenges

  • Delivering works within a live operational mining facility without disrupting day-to-day activities
  • Managing the safe handling, storage, and relocation of existing kitchen and dining equipment
  • Coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including client representatives and kitchen staff
  • Maintaining strict compliance with site safety, environmental, and operational standards
  • Managing logistics and sequencing in a remote Pilbara location

Outcomes

The Hope Downs 1 refurbishment delivered modern, efficient, and fully compliant facilities that significantly improved operational capability and workforce amenity. The upgraded kitchen and dining infrastructure supports increased site capacity while enhancing functionality and user experience.
